In a formal capacity, Mrs. Sucharita Basu was my academic counsellor at La Martiniere For Boys, where she encouraged me to pursue Computer Science at Stanford University. Informally she was so much more – a mentor, a supporter, a confidant, a true well-wisher. She is known for keeping students’ needs top of mind, and creating enabling circumstances for us to thrive.

You should know that she is always going to be honest and fair in her assessment of a situation, but will do her best to help you navigate it.

Mrs. Sucharita Basu helped find my passion and love for the subject of history and its invaluable significance in policy making. She introduced me to the various colleges and courses of study in India and abroad that I could pursue immediately after school. As my passion for the subject was rooted in my desire to engage with the Indian polity, she encouraged me to pursue my graduation studies and played a pivotal role in equipping me with the requisite skills to do so.

Ms. Abja Adhikary’s belief in my talents, nudged me into leadership roles, which shaped my confidence and self-belief for a career in public life. Both these educators are unusually gifted in their ability to identify their students’ interests, talents, and aptitudes, and accordingly shepherd them into successful careers.

Mrs. Sucharita Basu played an integral role in shaping me as a person and helping me make my career choices while I was in school. A mentor, a guide, and at times a friend, she fitted into each role perfectly to see me and so many others through those formative years. She ignored popular opinions about the reduced career prospects of humanities students and went out of her way to encourage me to pursue only those subjects that I was passionate about. This allowed me to shine academically and achieve coveted accolades.

My prestigious school awards and college rankings would not have been possible without her advice. I am tremendously grateful to her for the role she has played in shaping my career.

MWhen I decided to apply to universities in the United States for my undergraduate studies, Mrs. Sucharita Basu was a pillar of support. She put a lot of care into understanding my personality and then into assisting me in choosing colleges that would be the right fit for me. Through our numerous discussions, I was able to gain a great deal of clarity on each and every part of the application process – from fine-tuning my essays and highlighting certain parts of my resume, to finding the apt people to write my recommendations.

Although I decided against pursuing an undergraduate degree abroad, I retained her approach of shortlisting the right university for my needs. It played a major role in my decision to apply for and complete a master’s degree at Columbia Law School this year. Mrs. Sucharita Basu was always an influential figure in the lives of the students she worked with. This is equally true of her time inside, as well as outside the classroom. She made it a point to push us to excel at the things we had talents for – sometimes revealing these to us, when we were unaware of them ourselves. She did this by meeting us halfway; understanding what appeals to us, and designing a way to make it work for us. During her tenure as our academic counsellor, she encouraged us to question ourselves and find our true motivations for higher education.

Our choices were greatly influenced by this fundamental point of inquiry. Despite her other responsibilities, she was always available during the application process, and made it a priority to attend to our futures, whenever we reached out.

Mrs. Sucharita Basu helped me take the irreversible first step towards my future – deciding which college to attend. She was not only exceptionally kind, she was also very approachable and listened to all my questions and doubts patiently, academic or otherwise. She always took time out to mentor me. Her advice helped me carve out a path that allowed me to pursue the legal field while remaining in close proximity to the Social Sciences.

As a result, I received acceptances from some of the best Institutions in the country, especially in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. I will always be grateful to her for her constant love, support and guidance.

Applying to college can be an incredibly stressful and confusing process. With an ever increasing number of universities and majors to choose from, there is more information than ever before. At the same time it's harder to make sense of it all and the pressure to make the right choice is immense.

Ma'am Basu's guidance and counsel was crucial in helping me make the right choice. She made sure I was on track with all the different components of my applications and offered invaluable advice to help me recognize and showcase my strengths to the colleges I applied to.

There are few who can do justice to the word 'Teacher' as much as Mrs. Sucharita Basu. Truly transcending the boundaries of the syllabus, she ensured that ever since my formative years I never allowed myself to be just another brick in the wall. She taught me to believe in my dreams and be confident of achieving them right from a school debate till the arches of law school and a career as a corporate lawyer.

She celebrated my accomplishments and never allowed my failures to destroy me. She not only made me love a subject I had detested thus far but taught me to question and keep competing with myself. She was a unique combination of being a true perfectionist whose eyes would never fail to detect errors and yet a friend every generation could confide in.

Mrs Sucharita Basu has been an inspirational figure in life. She had taught me for two years during my high school and had change my life completely by boosting my confidence and shaping my career. She is not only an excellent teacher and a guide but also for me she has played the role of friend with whom I could discuss my problems and difficulties faced in my career path.

It's because of Ma'am Basu that I pursued my goal to study political science in St Xavier's college and later move to JNU for my further studies. Her contribution in my life has been immense and I am grateful to her for supporting and encouraging me to achieve my goals.
